Dear friends,

When I started Residencias Los Jardines, I started writing a weekly newsletter -determined to tell all the good, bad, and the ugly. I knew some readers would be interested in the construction process. I expected others might be interested in the lifestyle of two people who had decided to live outside the box. For others, the adventures of Lita, the parrot and the cat took on an entertainment saga all its own.

Residencias Los Jardines is finished. We periodically have re-sales and rental availability. Some readers may be interested in this information.

The result is a larger area offering more flexible furniture arrangements while still maintaining the option of including an office area. At 105m2 plus two parking spots each and storage locker, they offer a great opportunity for someone seeking views, security, central location, and first class, all round living...

Our Lives

Weather: Normal rainy season weather... wonderful...

What Happened This Week:

Is "Maybe" Coming?:

(Part 3) I contacted the would-be buyer asking when his money would be released. He snapped back saying he would not be pressured. Duh... you are the one who said you had the money / I turned down another acceptable offer and now you want to bark at me...? mmm...

Mismatchs: Again, mismatches have a habit of working themselves out. One owner accepted an offer to purchase their house... They will be happier in their new environment. Everyone wins on this...

Santa Fe: Caller wanted to see the car... great... into the discussion I asked if they had the money / I said that I did not want to finance it nor accept a trade of anything... the conversation ended... If they can't put it on CC, they can't buy it... they have no money. Why waste time "shopping" when your pockets are empty?????

Heredia House: Looking good / looking lonely -no calls.

Dumb Machines: I met a person at the Intercontinental. I had to park in hotel's parking lot. I got my ticket as expected, parked, and 30 min. later was ready to leave. I went to one of the kiosks where a pay machine was... I inserted the ticket... it popped back to me... I assumed I hadn’t been there long enough to be charged so proceeded to leave. Well, my assumption was wrong, the exit needle would not rise and I was told to go pay. I backed up the entire block... went to a different payment kiosk, and it said I owed 600 colones. Well... What the hell... anyway, I am not going to argue 60 cents... and the already existing aggravation... I had a 10,000 colon note... I got 96 – 100 colon coins... about 3 pounds worth!!!!!!! Can’t these machines be programmed to dispense both paper and coins????

Terror on the Home Front: Whenever Lita goes away, I am terrified of a parrot dyeing or flying away. I am actually white knuckled about this and have had nightmares. We have two... one is our bedroom roommate. He is free to roam the room and he does. He usually wants to play his stupid little game as soon as it is light. Last Sunday morning I got up, did my thing, dressed, left and made coffee. When enjoying my coffee / reading the computer in the hammock, it occurred to me that he hadn’t molested me this morning. Great as far as I’m concerned. I go to the market... return / shower... the little bugger is still no where to be found... I am now getting worried... I delay a bit more because he is either dead or gone... TERROR sets in... I build up the courage to solve this problem... I am scared, really scared of my nightmare coming true... I check the valence to see if he bit into a live wire and fried himself... one valance after the other... all four checked... nope, no dead bird. Ok, where is he? I start checking the nooks, crannies, under the bed. I check all the windows... they all have screening on them... This guy has just vanished... I start planning my various explanations to Lita... and envisioning what my life is going to be like now... I realize I should find a “off-me” solution... it will be easier—life will not be worth living... I am totally distracted by my future hell... I open the drawer and out flies the stupid parrot!!!!! The only time in my life I’ve been glad to hear the flutter of wings... wow! wow! wow! I am now saved from hell (at least for a few more days... until... //// actually the same thing happened the next day... but this time I didn't do the full panic... I just started opening drawers / closets... and out he flies from one of the drawers... It seems he has found a way to open the drawers, sneaks in, and I close it... Writing about this does not do justice the the terror I was going through... but, the little bugger is still with us -and so am I!!!!

Weber BBQ: After 18 years and multiple rebuilds, I have replaced the "Fiesta" with a second hand Weber... a friend sold their house and their new condo will not allow BBQs... His model was very close in size... just a couple modifications to the BBQ itself and to the space into which it was to fit... and we are almost there. The Fiesta is again being rebuilt for the next tico friend. It has a lot of life yet (after the rebuild)... Life goes on... and the Weber should outlast me...

INS Suit: Yes, we are into this more than 2 years. INS got the government to confiscate all the files from all the people suing them so they could presumably press their case of criminal activity... the hoped for effect was to kill the civil suits... but my lawyer (and others) had back up files so after the kaffufal it was kicked back to the Chamber of Commerce adjudication tribunal for resolution. The preliminary hearing to determine what documents each party will present is set for Sept. 20. I will be gone but that should not change anything. Even if I and the other 20 plaintiffs are successful, INS may well not pay... we'll see.

Crete: Here we come!! this trip is getting nearer, it is becoming a reality... 10 friends for two weeks... will we be talking with each other when we return? hope so... We are all arriving and departing independently and supposedly arriving at the same airport on the same day at about the same time... and again Lita has timed it so she gets back here from Canada just in time to pack another suitcase... regardless of her complaints (me), she has a pretty good life...

News Items of the Week

Comments:

General Strike: First in 18 years... has been called by the unions to protest against the government fiscal reform proposals. The date is Sept. 10. The last time this happened, the strike lasted for several months. We will see what happens. The fact that the colon : dollar exchange rate changed on Friday from 562 : 1 to 571 : 1 and the fact that the budget for interest on foreign borrowings is double the last budget and the general strike might be causing this rapid rate change. Scotiabank is still offering for a limited time a very high interest rate on new money... both colon and dollar deposits. I expect my monetary economist reader in Spain will help me sort this out...
