Dear friends,

When I started Residencias Los Jardines, I started writing a weekly newsletter -determined to tell all the good, bad, and the ugly. I knew some readers would be interested in the construction process. I expected others might be interested in the lifestyle of two people who had decided to live outside the box. For others, the adventures of Lita, the parrot and the cat took on an entertainment saga all its own.

Residencias Los Jardines is finished. We periodically have re-sales and rental availability. Some readers may be interested in this information.

Each of the units consists of two bedrooms / two bathrooms, and a large living/dining/kitchen area. The floor plan of each of these units has eliminated the optional "den / office" divider. The result is a larger area offering more flexible furniture arrangements while still maintaining the option of including an office area. At 105m2 plus two parking spots each and storage locker, they offer a great opportunity for someone seeking views, security, central location, and first class, all round living...

Our Lives

Weather: Normal rainy season weather. While we had some rain most every day, we are drying out...

Foreclosure: more twists and turns without results.

Life Moves Along: life returned to normal here at Los Jardines where we had minimal damage. The new administration has brought in two additional people to begin doing deferred maintenance and the two regular employees are now fully earning their keep. It will take us 6 mo. or so to work our way out of our current condition but we are moving in the right direction. A few more surprises were found this past week and separating the tangled financial information is still in progress. It will be sorted out and all will be fine for Doneste.

For those who were flooded or suffered significant damage from Nate, life continues to be a struggle. Roads around the country are beginning to be opened but there is not full access to all areas. Helicopters have been seen and heard flying all week carrying supplies to needy areas.

Full Occupancy: yes, my units are again at full occupancy. I worked this down from 6 vacancies and during this work down time, another one opened up -but as of this week, all have been re-leased. It has been a struggle and took longer than in previous times and rental rates had to be decreased, but all are again occupied. Whenever I have been at this state, I have had a vacancy within a month... Who will leave this time, I don't know but full occupancy doesn't seem to be a stable state for me... unfortunately... I would like to see more of the hammock...

Follow up: A month ago, an employee's son who broke his leg in 4 places and who we helped pay for a private hospital care ended up having an insurance policy on his son. The insurer -INS- did pay off something... how much I don't know... we have recovered some of our loan and will work on recovering the rest over time. The son is doing well and is expected to be able to walk normally for the rest of his life...

Supreme Court and Attorney General: the rot goes to the top... for sure... and their colleagues would only slap them. It took an outside body to initiate significant action.

Country's prosecutor will now be prosecuted due to union denuncia
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

The country’s chief prosecutor, Jorge Chavarría, and Magistrate Celso Gamboa are officially facing accusation for the alleged crimes of influence peddling and breach of duties, according to a denunciation filed the Asociación Nacional de Investigadores Criminales, one of several unions belonging to Poder Judicial.

The complaint is based on their behavior in regards a recent scandal about Chinese Cement imports. Allegedly both Chavarría and Gamboa are somehow involved in the way a loan to import the cement was granted.

The union also said the prosecutor would not take the required measures to start an investigation on Otto Guevara and Víctor Morales, legislator of the Libertarian Party and the Citizens Action Party respectively. The two legislators could have been involved in the irregular cement importation, according to several reports on Spanish media.

In the criminal complaint, the association also refers to the alleged coincidence in the trip made to Panama by Gamboa and the Chinese cement importer, Juan Carlos Bolaños Rojas, in October 2016. "The publications of several national media outlets point to an apparent traffic of influences, that involves the three powers of the Republic,” cites the document.

Recently, the Judicial Investigation Organization revealed the existence of multiple telephone contacts between Bolaños and legislators Morales Zapata, Otto Guevara Guth and the ex-deputy Walter Céspedes, who belongs to the Partido Unidad Social Cristiana.
