Dear friends,

When I started Residencias Los Jardines, I started writing a weekly news letter -determined to tell all the good, bad, and the ugly. I knew some readers would be interested in the construction process. I expected others might be interested in the lifestyle of two people who had decided to live outside the box. For others, the adventures of Lita, the parrot and the cat took on an entertainment saga all its own.

Residencias Los Jardines is finished. We periodically have resales and rental availability. Some readers may be interested in this information.

Our Lives

WEATHER: the rainy season continues to be slow to kick in. The weather department is now predicting lighter than usual rains this year -If so, this would be the 2nd. year in a row.

All in a Week's Living in CR:

Esterillos: this is an area south of Jaco on the Pacific coast about 1 1/2 hrs. drive from Los Jardines. There isn't much development there. The beach is long, straight, with a heavy surf and it's prone to rip tides; it isn't a beach for swimming but for looking at and walking only. Despite the limitations of the beach itself, we decided to go with friends because it was closer than our favorite beach which is a 4 hr. hike. Our friends had scoped out a hotel; we checked it out on the Internet; it had all the charm and charisma of a low grade prison and was in a no-where area. We passed on it and went in search of some place else. We checked out a hotel I had watched being built 6-7 years ago and one in which Lita and I had stayed several years ago. The price is now $240 a night; there was no one there -we left and wished them well. We then went to a small Tico-built hotel which had been purchased for his daughter by a guy I met a couple weeks earlier. It was a dump but we stayed anyway. I'm always amazed at how they can get $65 a night for a dumpy room, no TV, uncomfortable chairs,a very marginal swimming pool, a chaotic infrastructure, a minimal "continental breakfast" you make and serve yourself, and lousy service when we can't get that for a first class two bedroom house. The answer seems to be that you can stay at the decent hotel for $240 a night or any number of dumps for $65. There isn't any other choice. We do know of one place in Jaco -Vista Pacifica- at $65 a night which is well run, clean, and where service is excellent. Other than that, we'll have to continue to look.

Below are a number of briefs I ran across this week which I thought useful to understand what's happening in CR:

News Items of the Week

A 42 yr. old Canadian was playing around with some women and a couple guys didn't like it -he ran away nude but the bad guys shot him... this was either in Pozos or in Guachapaline -the reports have two different locations.

Dock works in Limon closed both the Morin and Limon ports... they are still protesting the government's contract awarded to a Dutch company to build a privately operated, modern, port which would receive and ship 80% of CR goods...

Walmart opened a $70 million state of the art distribution center... they are here to stay and service Central America.

Laura Chinchilla is under fire for using a private jet to go to a wedding in Peru. The jet was owned by her neighbor who's under investigation for drug trafficking.

Finland acquitted their end of the bribery scandal which involved a previous president of CR because they couldn't get a key witness to testify. The same happened on this end. Again the powerful get away with it; is it any wonder why there is no confidence in the legal process?

Nicaragua quietly dumped plans to use the Rio San Juan as a basis for a trans-ocean shipping canal to compete with the Panama canal and was the basis for various disputes with CR. This is the same route which was considered before the Panama Canal was built and every decade or so, comes back on line to re-consideration. Financing was going to be an issue.
