Re-Appreciation of Xmas in CR
» NOTES
When I started Residencias Los Jardines, I started writing a weekly news letter —determined to tell all the good, bad, and the ugly. I knew some readers would be interested in the construction process. I expected others might be interested in the lifestyle of two people who had decided to live outside the box. For others, the adventures of Lita, the parrot and the cat took on an entertainment saga all its own.
Residencias Los Jardines is finished. We periodically have resales and rental availability. Some readers may be interested in this information.
More and more, the content will be dominated by events of our new project, "El Dorado" for short. While the future is always uncertain, I again aim to tell it like it happens —the good, the bad, and the ugly, and that is what follows.
In an effort to make the format more interesting and visually appealing and to field inquiries re. El Dorado, the news letter is now being distributed by Jan Kozak, Marketing Manager, Hacienda El Dorado. I will remain the author.

Mexican Drug Cartel Has Established Bases In Costa Rica
Costa Rican authorities say that Mexico's powerful Sinaloa drug cartel has established bases and storage depots in the country from which it ships drugs to the United States. Drug trafficking in Costa Rica now "will certainly increase because Mexican drug traffickers are already here, especially the Sinaloa" cartel, Philip Springer, of the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) said in an interview with ADN radio.

The "season" in CR: As I've been focused on management issues, and the longer I'm in CR I've come to accept those things which I initially marveled at as being "normal". They are to me now but to the newbie, they still represent "charm": Pozos, like many small towns has an annual fair. It doesn't consist of much, a few rides, some low tech carnival games, cotton candy, and a couple CR easy food. However, while the fair isn't much, it is accompanied by rocket bombs early morning and during the day, fireworks, kids and families milling around, and usually one day of "cowboys" sitting on their well groomed horses drinking beer and talking. The Pozos fair is followed by the Santa Ana fair which is larger but much the same.
Christmas tamales will begin to appear in homes and the Sunday "feria" or farmer's market.
The Festival of Lights--CR's equivalent of the Rose Bowl Parade--was held last Saturday night and this year, while it was cool, it did not storm with wind and rain like last year. On December 26, the same route in San Jose will be the site of a huge "tope" or horse parade which will be attended by lots and lots of participants from all over CR as well as spectators. That will be followed in a month or so by the annual horse show and fair, etc in Palmares.
December is a busy month traffic and shopping wise. "Aguinaldo" is paid, people are out and about spending money and driving crazier than normal. It's a good month to try to avoid going anywhere or doing anything. Come January, 10, the streets and stores will be virtually empty--time to re-emerge.
Lita supervised the decorating of the Los Jardines Christmas tree and made sure it was a different tree than the parrot is placed in---when it was the same, the little bugger popped all the lights with his beak and gloated over it. --- too bad they were lighted when he did it!
New owners to Los Jardines are in the process of getting settled. They've personalized their home successfully through tried and true trades who we know deliver. They are, however, still struggling to buy a car. After several false starts, they settled on one from a used car dealer in Grecia. A week and a half later, they are still waiting for the paperwork to be completed and the car delivered. I hope it happens next week or else they could be waiting several more weeks due to Christmas. This is a different experience than buying a car in N. Am. There you leave with the car the same day.....
Doneste is 2 1/2 weeks and counting into setting up a bank account. All documents were delivered (a page full of requirements), certifications made by a lawyer, testimonials by third parties, certified financial statements, etc., etc., etc. We still haven't heard if the account has been or will be opened.
.....and then there are always the testimonials from Canada about the record snow falls, the freezing weather and the wind chill, etc. ... all of which I happily put aside as my windows are open, breeze blowing through, sunny skies, golf shirt weather, with the squawky parrot in the back ground, Lita gyrating to the Ipod with "Squeeky" the little parrot "perico" on her shoulder hanging on for dear life having a great time riding the twists and turns of her dance.....
