Dear friends,

When I started Residencias Los Jardines, I started writing a weekly newsletter -determined to tell all the good, bad, and the ugly. I knew some readers would be interested in the construction process. I expected others might be interested in the lifestyle of two people who had decided to live outside the box. For others, the adventures of Lita, the parrot and the cat took on an entertainment saga all its own.

Residencias Los Jardines is finished. We periodically have re-sales and rental availability. Some readers may be interested in this information.

Our Lives

Weather: We are into the dry season... winds have started and will get progressively stronger... no rain, few clouds, beautiful but we need to keep the plants happy... Nature is not doing it for us...

What Happened This Week:

Heredia House: It closed!!!!! wow!!!!!! but not without a hiccup... one which I had anticipated and tried very hard to head off, but no, the Tico banks could not read, did not think, dumb as a rock... but the lawyers they used quickly figure out a solution... easy and one had suggested to the bankers... and after a two hour delay, the problem was resolved. I find this event a bit amazing... the entire marketing, correspondence, discussions, showings, negotiations and details with the purchaser / bank were done in Spanish... Google translate has to be credited with written correspondence... it was frustrating, slow, and painful at times, but it was accomplished.

This sale ends the three headaches I acquired over the last two plus years... the Santa Fe, Distritcuatro, and Heredia. They have all taken a lot of energy, at lot of time, created a lot of stress and two produced a substantial financial loss. Regardless, I am happy, happy, happy to have them behind me. We'll see how much trouble I can get myself into in 2019.

Condo Administration: the work I have done, seems to be working. but there is always more... this is not a job I want but it looks like a job I am not going to be able to dump. Looking ahead, I am not happy about what will default to me... This week saw a purchaser-in-progress widen an opening in a structural wall. This is a no-no... The shareholder agreement requires that a plan should have been submitted along with a structural report. This protects the new idiot, and the other owners living in this four-plex. This is an issue yet to be resolved. We seem to be a magnet to idiots... or there are just a lot of idiots around...

Accidents: I have seen 5 accidents this past week. Traffic has been ts usual chaotic Dec. -most all have been small fender benders, two were rear-enders (one left the trunk in the back seat) and of course, there is always the car-motorcycle cases...

Alexa: Amazon "Echo-dot": LIta's is now operational. It took some doing but she now has greater freedom / control over her environment / life... Right now, she is intent on wearing it out playing music and calling friends... we'll see how the use matures...

COMMENTS

1. Admin workers: read this: they have normally take the same time off as teachers which is an additional month... even though their contract does not provide for it... what a way to run a country... no wonder it is broke and broken!! A headline said that the government was firing 19 teachers who left the country while on strike... First of all I doubt that it will actually happen and what a small, small issue compared to all major issue...

2. Rip Tides: North Americans / expats either can't read, can't understand, or ????/ who knows but each year a number of deaths occur from stupidity...

Costa Rica’s Minister of Education Orders Administrative Personnel Back to Work January 4

Around 20,000 people that work in the administration sector of the Ministry of Education received the order to return to work January 4 after the end of the year vacation, a month prior to their normal return date.

The order caused the personnel to immediately complained through their respective labor unions.

The Administration personnel was used to taking the same amount of vacation time as the teachers, leaving in mid-December and returning until the first Monday of February; however, this was something that had been done in the practice through negotiations with the Ministry, the norm, strictly applied, states that they only have one month of vacation time, and therefore the Minister is sticking to the rule.

“The Ministry of Education is the great education entity in the country. We comply with the work calendar and the established schedule, it is a way of educating thorough example, which is the preferred way of learning, specially for the young, as the majority of our students. There is no administrative, legal, or educational reason that justifies not going back to work when the society expects that this happens, and because that is what is established by law”, said the Minister of Education, Edgar Mora.

It is important to remember that the public education sector lost three months of classes due to the strike of protest the fiscal plan which was successfully passed anyways.

Teachers on the other hand, will return to classes February 5, following what’s established by law.

Signs Are Installed at 100 Beaches in Costa Rica to Warn Tourists of Rip Currents

Did you know that water accidents are the second cause of accidental death in Costa Rica? This is why, authorities of the Costa Rica Tourism Board are working on installing new warning signs at 100 beaches, that were selected as the most visited by national and foreign tourists and that are known to have a high level of risk due the presence of rip currents.

The works will continue through this Friday, December 15, date in which the high season officially begins. The initiative includes installing new signs and eliminating damaged old signs in beaches of the South, Center and North Pacific as well as the Caribbean coast.

This is part of the work of the Costa Rican Tourism Board (ICT) to offer more information to tourists in order to promote their safety; through an agreement with the Red Cross, voluntaries and lifeguards will be present during the high season at beaches that have been previously identified as having higher risk potential.

“Preventive signage at the beaches is part of a tourist security strategy to alert of the presence of rip currents. There is also printed and digital material available for tourism companies and tourists, training of the tourism sector and video recommendations playing on the screens of the Juan Santamaria International Aiport and Daniel Oduber airport in Liberia, Guanacaste”, explained Víctor Ramírez, chief of Touris Services of ICT. The material is available in Spanish and English.

Most beaches in Costa Rica where rip currents are usually formed have warning signs and flags at the beach indicating when and where it is dangerous to swim, pay attention to these safety warnings. Don’t go swimming if you have been drinking alcohol, don’t swim at night or during a storm, try not to go to the beach by yourself. If caught in a rip current, don’t fight it, float! Swim parallel to the shore and swim back to land at an angle.
