Credit Card Replacement: By Wednesday the newly issued CC still did not work despite having attended to the branch on Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesday, I insisted this be dealt with... The branch people said the card had been activated but they had frozen my account...!! Why???? after 20 min. of ??? they said because the account was over due.... mmmm... I showed them my last statement paid in full with the exception of the $75 disputed charge... mmmm... it seems that the statement issued June 8 -and which I had not even received- was marked as delinquent... despite my protests and their blank stares, I figured the only way to resolve this is to pay it... after I reviewed the charges... they couldn't print it... I paid it anyway since I needed to free up the card. After I returned home, I received the statement... all charges were mine... no problem... End of this story...

Marketing:

Santa Fe: Three calls... two wanted me to finance their "purchase"... I declined. Tico's I am attracting have no money... One wanted a 4 wheel drive...

Distritcuatro: I have had lots of inquiries... and a few showings. Again, no one has any money... they want to trade something... e.g. a lot in Cartago... I a number of cases they are people with no money looking for an inexpensive house in that location... none are willing to renovate the place... cleaning up the lot, building one wall, landscaping, repairing the roof, and drainage / septic fixes... I bought my first house at 32 -it was a fixer-upper... I worked on it for 18 mo... and never looked back... none of these people have that orientation.

Rentals: One on Thursday and three scheduled for today. We'll see.

Heredia House: No calls... It sits there looking good...

Another week of churning, churning. No results...

Comments:

1. Nicaragua: Lots of turmoil which is affecting travel and commerce. Trucks are trapped not being able to transit.

2. General Strike: Unfortunately I haven't seen any reports of the event.

3. General Strike -CR: As predicted, the unions are becoming pro-active and if they are able to sufficiently paralyze the country, they may have leverage... We'll see.

1. Commerce in Costa Rica Reports 70% Increase in Logistics Costs Due to Crisis in Nicaragua

The Chamber of Commerce in Costa Rica has expressed its concern as the situation affecting Nicaragua continues to affect the transportation of merchandise through this nation’s territory, affecting both imports and exports. Due to this, companies have been obligated to use other means of transportation such as maritime and aerial which have resulted in an increase in the logistics costs of as much as 70%.

“It is important to remember that Central America is the second most important commercial partner for Costa Rica, exports reach 2.3 billion dollars a year, with ground transportation being the most used means of transportation”, states the press release.

“In 2017, over 81 thousand containers of exports and imports including international transports traveled through the Peñas Blancas frontier, making it one of the most important ground routes”, explained Alonso Elizondo, Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce.

For the time being, the recommendation is to not move ground cargo through Nicaragua, many companies have had their merchandise stuck for more than 10 days, when this merchandise does not reach its destinations this generates millions in losses which could be as much as $10 million dollars.

“The Chamber of Commerce in Costa Rica, requests that the Government establishes contingency measures to mitigate the effects that the political situation in Nicaragua is having on the commerce”, concludes the press statement.

The Industries’ Chamber of Costa Rica, also raised their voice in the matter: “The industrial sector considers that it is urgent to elevate the topic to the OAS and all pertinent international organisms for diplomatic actions to be taken in a situation that is getting out of control”.

“It is important to point out that there are many Costa Rican companies with important investments in the Nicaraguan territory, it is fundamental and necessary for the industrial sector that there is a climate of democracy, peace, stability and freedom of speech in Nicaragua, situation that has been lost during the period that our sister nation is experiencing”, commented Enrique Egloff, President of the Industries’ Chamber of Costa Rica.

2. Costa Rica will close all its consulates during the strike in Nicaragua

In response to the call for a national strike in Nicaragua on Thursday, the Costa Rican Embassy announced that it will close all of its consulates in that country.

The Higher Council for Private Enterprise (Cosep) of Nicaragua, one of the strongest business organizations, supported the 24-hour strike that is scheduled to start at 6:00 am on Thursday. The business group said that there are threats from ‘parapolice’ groups -with weapons of war- in companies and businesses, even within free zones.

The Nicaraguan businessmen reiterated their support for the proposal of the Episcopal Conference to find a peaceful solution through dialogue.

Cosep announced support to any civic expression of protest and citizen self-defense. In addition, it demanded the end of any police and parapolice repression.

Due to social boiling, with dozens of deaths in between, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MREC) of Costa Rica asked citizens to avoid traveling to Nicaragua.

According to information published by the AFP news agency, on Thursday last week, the president requested 48 hours to reflect and give a written response to the bishops’ proposal to resume the talks. The dialogue was suspended by the Catholic hierarchy after violent repression of the opposition marches of May 30th, which left 16 dead.

Daniel Ortega, the Nicaraguan president, has not responded to the bishops and the repression of the protests has escalated all over the country with rifle attacks and hooded armed men aboard trucks and motorcycles.

Since the demonstrations began, 56 days ago, the death toll is 148 dead and more than a thousand injured, according to the Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights (Cenidh).

The president is trying to lift road blockades that affect 70% of the country’s roads, and accused the demonstrators of preventing the free movement of people and goods, including the transport of cargo from neighboring countries.

A national strike can have unpredictable consequences for both the economy and politics, warned economist Néstor Avendaño to AFP, who recalled that the last time there was a national cessation of activities was in 1979 against the dictatorship of Anastasio Somoza.

3. Labor Unions in Costa Rica Announce General Strike on June 25

Labor unions in Costa Rica have announced this Thursday in a press conference a general strike that will take place since the early hours of Monday, June 25, as a means to manifest their opposition to the fiscal plan proposed by the Government.

The labor union leaders, Albino Vargas from Patria Justa and ANEP (National Association of Public Workers); Martha Rodriguez from Bloque Unitario Sindical y Social (Buscco), Movimiento de Unidad Sindical and Rerum Novarum, among others, explained that in this occasion they will not be limiting their protests to San Jose, but instead it will be a “National Movement” that will have an impact in different areas of the country including the blockage of some roads.

“Deputies of the Legislative Assembly are public servers like all public workers are and they must listen to the voice of the people. We condemn acts of corruption that have had an impact in the public finances and credibility”, stated Martha Rodriguez.

“We request understanding from the population, in view that these arbitrary and harmful measures (fiscal plan) are not leaving us with any alternative, we invite the working class to join our peaceful movement and manifest our position against what will bring inequity and misery to our nation”, continued Rodriguez.
