Dear friends,

When I started Residencias Los Jardines, I started writing a weekly newsletter -determined to tell all the good, bad, and the ugly. I knew some readers would be interested in the construction process. I expected others might be interested in the lifestyle of two people who had decided to live outside the box. For others, the adventures of Lita, the parrot and the cat took on an entertainment saga all its own.

Residencias Los Jardines is finished. We periodically have re-sales and rental availability. Some readers may be interested in this information.

Our Lives

Weather: Beautiful, normal, sunny, 25 degrees, cool evenings, gentle breeze... wow... loving it.

Tough Sledding: Still having to hound delinquents...

District 4: One showing and several planned for next week.

Mortgage payments: One promised but then as typical in this culture, didn't follow through. She is foolish... it get's more and more expensive everyday and I am not in the mood to be kind... as I said before, the Kleenex Box is empty... and I am wondering if there was bad intent on her part... we'll see... next week the foreclosure will be registered... and her credit rating will be ruined...

Prowler: Lots of chatter among some of the residents... all lead to quiet data gathering now. What came out of the "discussion" was that in three of the 4 cases, there was a lack of personal effort to secure their home... in the one other case, steps were taken but the normally sufficient security cable was not enough and was cut... the attempt was foiled and a bigger chain has now replaced the high tensile cable. The administration is adding more night lighting and the motion sensor light fixtures are being rehabbed and bulbs added...

Maintenance: For the past 5 weeks, workers have been rebuilding the ramp to our house. This has had had a maintenance in 5+ years and water had been allowed to get to the steel frame. The result is a more expensive and complex job than had the mtnc. been done in a timely fashion. I knew this was happening and I am not surprised at any of the repairs... unfortunately, it should never have been allowed to fall into disrepair. We have other locations as well.

News Items of the Week

Comments:

1. Cranes: After doing everything the unions could to delay / kill the new container port at Moin - they have now opted to allow new equipment to better compete... wise move but I think the new port will probably kill most of the business as it is deeper and will be more efficient... and the turn around time will be much better... which is important to ships which have lots of money tied up.

2. Election: The two candidates are supposedly in a statistical dead heat. As I remember last election, the polls were very inaccurate. I suspect the same is the case this time. Both are just now trying to put together a team to support them should they win... we'll see

1. Two new cranes start operations at the docks in Limón

By AM Costa Rica staff

Monday the two Post Panamax gantry cranes officially went into operation, helping to modernize the public port now that the Dutch APM Terminals Co. has begun competing operation in Moín.

The docks are run by the Junta de Administración Portuaria y de Desarrollo Económico de la Vertiente Atlántica de Costa Rica, known as JAPDEVA. It is is a state agency that was formed to generate development along the Caribbean coast.

The cranes were baptized as Luisa and Glenda, honoring the first female port mechanic and the first operator of port equipment, respectively.

The terminal has waited for three decades the arrival of this type of machinery.

Upon their arrival and start of operations, JAPDEVA expects to reduce container unloading and loading times by four hours, a process that currently extends for up to 21 hours. Both Post Panamax cranes have the capacity to move 35 containers per hour.

The total investment amounts to $16 million.

The equipment was purchased from Sany Co. of the heavy machinery sector.

The equipment complies with all international safety standards including the color pattern used to ensure better visibility.

"The decision to acquire this equipment lies in the urgency of reducing the high obstruction that our terminals shows, obstruction that translates into delays in the operation and high costs for importers and exporters, costs that are passed on to final consumers," said. Ann McKinley, executive president of JAPDEVA.

JAPDEVA has been making investments recently to make up for failures to modernize over the last 20 years, according to the executive president.

The institution has also acquired other equipment such as a new tugboat, a stacker of containers and transfer equipment such as port heads and forklifts.
