Brian Timmons Dear friends, When I started Residencias Los Jardines, I started writing a weekly newsletter -determined to tell all the good, bad, and the ugly. I knew some readers would be interested in the construction process. I expected others might be interested in the lifestyle of two people who had decided to live outside the box. For others, the adventures of Lita, the parrot and the cat took on an entertainment saga all its own. Residencias Los Jardines is finished. We periodically have re-sales and rental availability. Some readers may be interested in this information. Brian Timmons |

Our Lives
A Country and Society that Works: We continue in Toronto -meeting more friends, catching up, visiting old haunts, and restaurants. When I am finished my schedule on Monday, I will have caught up with some 30 friends along with Lita's family -immediate and extended. It is amazing to me after having been in CR for so long, that meetings actually happen, on time, without hick ups, rescheduling, etc. The road system works, there is signage, traffic lights work, people actually follow the rules of the road, not menacing motor bikes, sidewalks that you can actually walk on comfortably, the neighborhoods in which I spent many, many years renovating houses are now full of chic, townie, well kept homes, supporting equally chic, townie commercial areas where lattes, expensive baby strollers, and old and young co-mingle. I find restaurant food expensive. While much of our time with friends is spent reminiscing and catching up with semi-current and current events, the conversation inevitable strays into politics and of course, American politics. I have found only one person who is a mild supporter of Trump, all the others denounce him personally and feel many of his policies are wrong headed. However, none of the views expressed are extreme, tolerance and bewilderment are best adjectives to describe their views. On the public transport systems and on the sidewalks, are all ages, various dressed people indicating different national origins, different skin colors, various languages spoken, all are co habituating, no one is carrying a gun, no one seems rude or aggressive... the only rude and aggressive behaviour experienced, I have had or have witnessed, is a Toronto garbage worker who was having a bad day... dueling trucks and really unhappy workers nearly ran us down on the sidewalk with their truck while throwing bins all over the place--totally unnecessary and uncalled for... this hasn't changed in the past 20 years... well, guess it is consistent with other timelessnesses. A house was advertised for sale and sold within 3 days... at $1.2 mil, no parking, about 1300 sf... meanwhile, no calls for rental or sale in CR... While things were working without problems here in Canada, the following was happening in CR: The electricity was cut off on one one of my Paradisus condos. Messages back and forth, I had paid the invoice before leaving... regardless, the power was off. As the event played out, it was determined that the electrical company had made a mistake; they were suppose to shut of a neighbors meter... the Administration wouldn't intervene so the tenant took the matter into his own hands, cut the tag (CNFL's property), turned on his meter, and shut off the correct meter... and... I received a nasty letter saying that I had not paid the June condo fee... for the same unit... I had, I paid it early and notified them of such a payment... they simply cannot follow their own paper trail... deposits clearly described and noted... after all, the other two units had been paid, at the same time, no problem for the admin... again, nothing is simple in CR... it always gets screwed up... and no matter what back ups and proactive efforts are taken, nothing will eliminate screw ups!! As sometimes happens, virtually all my electronics needed attention: my laptop decided to die... solution, new one ($2,800 Cdn), iPhone batter died, various cables had to be replaced... as Lita said, at least we got it all at one time... we move on... and were able to deal with it. |
