Dear friends,

When I started Residencias Los Jardines, I started writing a weekly news letter -determined to tell all the good, bad, and the ugly. I knew some readers would be interested in the construction process. I expected others might be interested in the lifestyle of two people who had decided to live outside the box. For others, the adventures of Lita, the parrot and the cat took on an entertainment saga all its own.

Residencias Los Jardines is finished. We periodically have resales and rental availability. Some readers may be interested in this information.

Our Lives

WEATHER: no rain back to irrigating... The garden has responded but that spurt will wither unless we get rains.

All in a Week's Living in CR:

I've focused on personal issues and business issues. I expect to be on top of both domains by this time next week. I'm beginning to see why my colleagues have so much time to spend differently than I've been doing. Social life is taking on more of an importance...

Below are a number of articles I ran across this week which I thought useful to understand what's happening in CR:

News Items of the Week

CR news was mainly about Obama and other heads of state coming for a conference. I didn't follow it much.

(1) The first article is interesting to me because it shows the demographic shift and helps explain why Los Jardines is seeing fewer clients and why the nature of our client base is changing...

(2) The second article shows how far CR has yet to go before it even gets "reasonable" and when compared to Panama -an easy alternative to CR- Panama is winning in the attraction of new businesses.

Half of Americans living in Costa Rica under 29

A total of 16,000 U.S. nationals represent the third largest immigrant group in Costa Rica, after Nicaraguans and Colombians. Statistics show that 42 percent have worked in Costa Rica for more than 12 years and most commonly work in teaching, business administration or trade. According to an analyst with the University of Costa Rica, the perception that most Americans relocate to Costa Rica for retirement is due to the frequent turnover among this group, which rarely remain for the long term.

Costa Rica advances slightly in ease of doing business
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

The economics ministry reported Thursday that Costa Rica has advanced 12 places on the World Bank Doing Business index. A low ranking reflects the ease of doing business in 10 categories.

Costa Rica's new ranking is 110 out of 185 economies, according to the World Bank.

The Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Comercio last year set up a plan to improve the ranking and put in place 86 reforms, it said. However, nearly half are long-range.
